Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott is often touted as the “go to” book for inspiring writers and while the book certainly deserves that distinction, if you’re looking for a “how-to” book on writing, you’ll more than likely be disappointed with this read. Personally, I doubt anyone could write a how to manual for authors. Have you seen a manual that successfully teaches us how to love? Exactly.
What Bird by Bird is, however, a very talented writer, Anne Lamott, sharing her writing expertise using the power of story to inspire and teach inspiring authors. Anne Lamott does teach writing in a classroom environment and it felt as if I were being treated to special, very fast paced, sessions in the comfort of my own home.
What’s inside Bird by Bird
The basic formula for drama is setup, buildup, payoff. Just like a joke.
~ Anne Lamott
First and foremost, Bird by Bird is loaded with story. Anne Lamott teaches by example, whether intentional or not, by sharing story after story as she makes specific points and ideas of writing. You’ll also be treated with the author’s expertise on topics like:
- Finding your voice
- Telling a story
- Dealing with writer’s block
- Writing groups
- The dangers of liability
- The art of observation and perception
- Writing plots
- Creating dialog within your writing
- And a lot more.
While Bird by Bird won’t “teach” you to write, it will certainly help. At the very least, you should close the book inspired, no matter what or how much you plan to write.
My suggestion? Read the book, soak it in with an open mind, take notes, enjoy the read and, PLEASE, take immediate action. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. 🙂
